about

This is the story of growing up with a life threatening medical condition and finding music as salvation. The scene is set in bay ridge, and showcases my childhood brand of struggle and the musical heroes who helped get me through. As a young kid in early 90s New York, hip hop was in its golden age, punk rock n’ roll was still on the radio and I breathed it like oxygen - it was as perfect a time as any to drown out early trauma with music. I remember I had the O.P.P. hat that my dad picked up in chinatown & I saw fridges full of 40s in dre music videos. I went digging through my parents vinyl, found never mind the bullocks and never mind on tape - the streets of New York were exploding. It was kind of a magic moment in culture. I took those images and songs with me on every check up at the hospital. It’s been said many times, in many ways but “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.”

lyrics

And I was sitting in the back of the class
With my orange drink breath
Teacher says,
“we’re gonna have a snack, it’s your birthday party”
How ya gonna eat when ya got nothing on your plate?
Another check-up at the hospital
Another weekly physical
They take my blood and my mommy’s dough
With the butterfly needle

I feel fine
I brought my Buddy Holly
He was a friend of mine
And Dee Dee and Joey and Debbie
Radio drown me out
Homocystinuria

And then
The hip hop hurray came through
It was 1992
Teach me to dance in the waiting room
Teach me to laugh at the doom and gloom

It’s alright, I got Bobby D
Jimmy C, Sister Nancy
I got The RZA
The GZA
The STZA
Got Kid Creol
Come save my soul

I had Missy and Chrissie
Come with me
Radio drown me out
Homocystinuria
